Introduction to Mindful Living
(2 nonsequential sessions)

There has been much written and discussed about mindfulness. In this introductory course, we will define mindfulness in a more tangible manner while also exploring mindfulness techniques that you can immediately incorporate into your daily life to improve your well being, focus and outlook.

These introductory sessions will be nonsequential, so participants may attend one or both. The techniques will be presented in a manner that a new participant can follow easily but allow those who have taken the earlier session to take the practice at a more advanced level.

The sessions will focus on specific techniques so participants may be able to assess if a four week more in-depth series is something they would be interested in attending.

At the end of each introductory session, the instructor will remain online to discuss any questions or to provide more in-depth explanations.

Special 45-Minute Themed-Edition Sessions

This session will present specific mindfulness techniques, readings, and reflections to reflect seasons and special occasions. Participants with no prior mindfulness experience are welcome, as are those practitioners who enjoy the practice in a community setting. This session will also begin with the practice of specific techniques, and there will be time at the end for reflections, observations and questions.

An example of an hour session would be:

1.) Introduction of breathing techniques that are helpful in reducing stress and increasing concentration

2.) Guided visualization practice to quiet the mind and deepen the ability to focus

3.) Exercises to build awareness of thoughts and emotions and how to manage them

4.) A guided scan of the body to identify and ease stress and tension

5.) Alternating the following practices in the sessions:

 - pleasant/ unpleasant experience analysis

 - sensory grounding techniques

 - mindful writing

 - mindful communications

 - mindful movement

(The purpose of providing a wide spectrum of techniques is to allow participants to sample each and to utilize those that particularly resonate with them. For example, sitting in stillness can be difficult for some individuals. However, a mindful walking exercise could be a better alternative to increase focus and clarity for those individuals.)

6.) Guiding a repetitive ‘loving kindness’ exercise to increase positive thinking and acceptance of others

7.) Reading of a reflective piece so as to train the mind to think differently rather than just recycle prior thoughts or experiences. A new ability to problem solve unprecedented issues with a new perspective, an open mind, and in a productive manner is needed now more than ever.

8.) Ending the session with a description of a ‘mindful day’ and offering suggestions that can be immediately utilized to improve health and productivity.
